World's culture heritage, one of the eight grottoes, 5A national tourist attraction, national key cultural unit under protection, one of the ten cultural marks of Chongqing.


Dazu Stone Carvings are located in Dazu county of Chongqing. They were religious cravings from late Tang and early Song dynasties, mainly Buddhism topics along with Confucianism and Taoism ideals. Dazu Stone Cravings are well-known art gem, historical treasure and Buddhism land. It has the name of “Eastern Art Pearl”.


Dazu stone carvings have 75 sites with over 50 thousands of religious stone statues and 100 thousands bodies and inscriptions in total, of which the Baoding Mountain and North Mountain are the most famous. Taking Buddhism statues as the main topic is the representative of late Chinese grotto art. Dazu stone carvings stand together with Dunhuang Mogao grottoes, Yungang grottoes, Longmen grottoes and Maiji Mountain grottoes,which are the major four grottoes in China. They all show the marvelous wisdom and creativity of ancient Han people.


Dazu Stone Carvings covered a time-line from the 9th century to 13th century, famous for its high-quality and various themes. From the secular to the religious world, the carvings reflect the daily lives of that period of time in China and prove the harmony where Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism co-existed. It is honored as the grotto art gallery of the late 9th century to the mid 13th century.


The enormous scale, high quality, rich content and completion of Dazu stone carvings are rare in the world. Many politicians and celebrities all over the world marvel it. Thus it has become the must-go place for tourists from home and abroad.
